  1. Week 2
    1. Trophoblast forms and has 2 layers:
      1. 1. cytotrophoblast (makes cells)
        1. 2. syncytiotrophoblast: forms syncytium = responsible for invasion of the blastocyst into the uterine endometrium and production of hormones
      2. the germ disc (embryoblast) forms and has 2 layers:
        1. 1. epiblast
          1. 2. hypoblast
        2. Three cavities form:
          1. 1. amniotic = dorsal to epiblast
            1. 2. yolk sac = ventral to hypoblast
              1. Later in the week...
                1. 3. chorionic cavity forms
          2. Extraembryonic mesoderm forms around the outside of the amnion and yolk sac splits into two layers:
            1. 1. somatic
              1. 2. splanchnic
          3. Week 1
            1. 1. Fusion of pronuclei
              1. 2. Blastomeres divide
                1. 3. Morula forms
                  1. 4. Blastocyst forms
                    1. Consists of a fluid filled cavity, an inner cell mass = embryo, and an outer cell mass = trophoblast (fetal contribution to the placenta)
                  2. Week 3
                    1. Gastrulation
                      1. The process of making the 3 germ layers:
                        1. ectoderm
                          1. skin, CNS, PNS, eyes, internal ear, neural crest cells(bones & connective tissue of the face and part of the skull)
                          2. mesoderm
                            1. blood, bones, connective tissue, urogenital system, cardiovascular system
                            2. endoderm
                              1. gut, gut derivatives (liver, pancreas, lungs, etc.), parenchyma of glands
                          3. Notochord formation
                            1. helps induce the CNS
                              1. eventually forms the nucleus pulposus in intervertebral discs.
