PLASMA MEMBRANE
1. Function
  1. responsible for controlling what gets into and out of the cell
  2. Synthesizes cell wall components
  3. Assists in DNA replication
  4. Captures energy as ATP
  5. Carries on respiration
2. structure
  1. phospholipid bilayer with proteins embedded in and attached to the intracellular and extracellular surfaces
  2. often have two plasma membranes with a space between them known as the periplasm
CYTOPLASM
1. substance of the cell inside the plasma membrane
2. Gel-like, yet fluid (80% Water)
3. Biologists discovered that prokaryotic cells have a complex and functional cytoskeleton, helps to divide and helps the cell maintain its plump, round shape
NUCLEOID (DNA)
1. contains the main DNA material
2. bacterial chromosome, bacteria often contain small circular, double-stranded DNA molecules called plasmid
3. Plasmic do not contain genetic material essential for growth (limited)
RIBOSOMES
1. Protein synthesis
2. Have about half of the amount of ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
3. Can be inhibited by certain antibiotics
