  1. In speech, a segment is
    1. any one of the discrete units that occur in a sequence of sounds
      1. which can be broken down into phonemes,
        1. syllables or words in spoken language
          1. through a process called speech segmentation.
      2. Examples:
        1. An example of segmental phonemes are the sounds of "a," "e," "i," "o," and "u."
      3. Suprasegmental phonology
        1. refers to intonation patterns
          1. stress placement
            1. and rhythm in spoken language;
              1. also called prosody.
            2. Word Stress
              1. In polysyllabic words, one or more syllables
                1. tend to have a
                  1. higher emphasis on them
                    1. than others.
                  2. Sentence stress
                    1. within a larger unit
                      1. Emphasize particular words
                      2. least 3 levels of accentuation,
                        1. We can distinguish at
                        2. distinguish between homograph verbs and nouns
