Reactions with Oxygen
1. lithium + oxygen ---> lithium oxide
  1. 4Li + O2 -----> 2Li2O
2. Need to be stored in oil
3. Reactions become progressively more violent down the group
Reactions with water
1. Alkali metals react more violent with water
2. lithium + water ---> lithium hydroxide + hydrogen
  1. 2Li + 2H2O ----> 2LiOH + H2
3. Reactions get progressively more violent down the group
4. Potassium creates heat as it reacts with water to produce hydrogen that then gets lit to produce a lilac flame
Reactions with halogens
1. lithium + chlorine ----> lithium chloride
  1. 2Li + Cl2 ---> 2LiCl
2. Reactions become progressively more violent down the group
3. lithium reacts with chlorine gas to produce the salt lithium chloride
