Kohlberg's Framework in the Stages of Moral Reasoning

Nota:

• Meaning that one won't do something wrong because he is afraid of the consequences. E.g. Mary does not steal because she is scared of the consequences.

1. Obedience and Punishment
   1. Based on one's SELF'S interest.
   2. Doing things in fear of punishment, not because it is morally incorrect.

Nota:

• Meaning that one does not do because there are no benefit for him. E.g. Mary pairs up with Chole to steal money, but Mary will not steal as she knows that Chole will keep the money to herself.

1. Self-interest driven
   1. Doing things with an intended motive.
   2. Doing things to gain something from it, not because you really want to help/get involved.

1. Social Contract
   1. Supersedes the law, and upholds only what is right in that particular context.
   2. Doing something because you believe that it is fair and just and goes along with your own principles and values in that given context.

1. Universal Ethical Principle
   1. Based on what is universally accepted and the 'norm'.
   2. Doing something regardless of culture, religion or personal beliefs to uphold what is universally right.

1. Good boy/girl
   1. Upholding one's reputation in fear of tarnishing it.
   2. Not doing bad things because you're afraid people might think badly of you.

1. Law and Order
   1. Based on societal impact and community.
