Poor sanitary conditions
1. Leads to ingestion of cysts (parasites) from:
  1. Fecally contaminated
    1. Food
    2. Hands
    3. Water

Chain of infection
Infection
1. 10% - 20% of people actually become sick from exposure
  1. Symptoms will develop between 2 - 4 weeks after exposure
    1. Symptoms
      1. Mild
        Diarrhea
        Stomach pain
        Stomach cramps
      2. Severe
        When it manifests as Amoebic Dysentery
        Stomach pain
        Bloody stool
        Fever
        Occasionally:
        E. histolytica enters the liver and creates an abcess
        Rupture of abscess usually causes shock and death
        Even rarer:
        Can spread to the lungs and brain
Treatment
1. Metronidazole: Anti-Biotic
  1. Inexpensive
  2. Highly effective
Incidence
1. Much higher in developing countries
  1. In Western countries Male Homo-Sexuals, Prisoners and Immigrants are most at risk
Prevelance
1. Estimated worldwide 35 - 50 Million annually
  1. Estimated worldwide 100,000 deaths annually
