Cult of Domesticity
In the 1800's, Women were expected to stay home and do chores, cook and take care of children.
In the mid 1900's, women didn't like the idea, since their husbands would come home drunk and be abusive.
A women was supposed to submit, be pure, be more religious than their husbands and to provide a comforting home for them as well.
This is what started the womens rights movement.
Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton
In 1850, Anthony and Stanton met in Seneca Falls, New York and formed a lifetime alliance as Women's Right's Association.
In 1869, Susan and Elizabeth created NWSA to change the 15th amendment which excluded women.
Elizabeth did most of the writing, while Susan managed the business affairs.
In 1890, The AWSA and NWSA (Two groups who supported women's rights, combined.
In 1910-1914 the group led by these two (NAWSA) expanded their organization to the states.
Alice Paul
In 1913, Alice formed a rival congressional union, "National Women's Party" to help push equal rights for women.
She helped push Women's Right's in Britain.
Once Britain got their rights, she wanted the Women all around the world to have rights as well.
She organized a parade to support women's rights and to gain attention from everyone.
Alice was arrested for pushing the Women's Suffrage so she decided to go on a hunger strike and she was force fed.
On August 26, 1920, the nineteenth amendment was ratified.
