IDENTITY
  1. CLASS
    1. Identity is who you are. It is a combination of things you are born with and social constructs. Identity can be narrowed to seven key parts: Class, Age, Gender, Ethnicity, Sexuality, National Identity and hybrid identity. All of this contributes to your identity. It's how other people view you.
      1. Identity is a studied exclusively by social action theorists. This is because SA believe that the individual shapes society and thus is important.
      2. AGE
        1. GENDER
          1. GENDER is a social construct. It was created to set labels, norms, and values. Aforementioned norms and values have now been dubbed 'gender roles' and the definition of gender roles has changed over time
          2. ETHNICITY
            1. NATIONAL IDENTITY
              1. HYBRID IDENTITY
              2. SEXUALITY
                1. On the other hand, culture is a way of life. It is a combination of norms, values, beliefs, etc.
                  1. Culture is studied by structuralists. This is because structuralists believe society shapes the individual and thus the individal isn't important, it's the whole social group.
                  2. BACKGROUND NOTES
                    1. THE LABELLING THEORY - This is the theory that society creates labels to categorise individuals and shape a person's 'self.' The self is socially constructed and reconstructed through interactions with the community. Humans are aware of how others perceive them and desire to be accepted. They therefore go against any behaviours labelled as deviant. In other cases, to fit in with a select subculture or group, the individual may label themselves as part of that group.
