Eating Disorders
Anorexia Nervosa
When a person maintains a starvation diet despite being significantly underweight
Usually an adolescent female
15% or more underweight
Can be a diet that spins out of control into an obsession for weight loss
slow heart rate, loss of bone density, fatigue, muscle weakness, hair loss, dehydration, extremely low bmi
Binge: Involves episodes of binge eating combined with restriction behavior
Restriction: extremely low-calorite diet & or excessive exercise
Estimated to be the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder
Bulimia Nervosa
When a person alternates binge eating with purging or fasting
Usually maintain an apparently normal or at least minimally healthy body
Inflammation to mouth, stomach ulcers, pancreatitis, tooth decay or staining, irrgular heartbeat & irregular bowel movements
Likes the feeling of control
Does not realize they are unhealthy, even when signs are shown
Symptoms are heart attacks, hair loss
One of the deadliest psychological disorders
42% of first to third grade girls want to be thinner
81% of ten year olds are afraid of being "fat"
Over half of teenage girls and nearly a third of teenage boys have used troubling weight control methods
20 million women & 10 million men suffer(ed) from eating disorders
Binge-Eating
Without purging or fasting
Significant binge-eating followed by emotional distress, feelings of lack of control, disgust or guilt
Sometimes triggered by stress, or need for or lack of control
Not a tell-tale sign for childhood sexual abuse
Thinks they need to be perfect, have low self-worth, they fall short of expectations or is concerned with others' perceptions
Much more common among white women, often with higher socioeconomic status
Between 10 & 20% of people diagnosed are men
Body Dysmorphic Disorder or BDD
psychological illness that centers on a person's obsession with physical flaws
Linked with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or OCD which is unwanted repetitive thoughts which become obsessions
Muscle Dysmorphia: obsessed with the idea they aren't muscular enough
May exercise excessively, groom obsessively or get cosmetic procedures
Critical & unsatisfied with appearance, fears of deformity, anxiety, depression, fear of being judges & avoids social interactions
May be from Serotonin & Dopamine
