Epidemiology
1. Common cause of morbidity and mortality
  1. 1 out of 20 people develop DVT over lifetime
    1. Existing data suggest 80 cases per 100,000 annually
      1. Usually affects those over 40 years old
      2. Male-to-female ratio is 1:2:1( higher risk in males)
        Increase with age in both sexes
2. Exact incidence is not unknown due to limited studies
Clinical Manifestations
1. Positive Homans sign
  1. Pain, warmth, and edema of limb
    1. Variable discoloration of limb
2. "Silent" pulmonary embolism
3. Visible veins
4. Symptoms of PE
  1. SOB, chest pain, rapid breathing, hemoptysis
