excessive fear triggered by an object, place or situation
specific phobia
phobia of an object
flying, snakes
social anxiety
phobia of social situations
public speaking/ toilet
agoraphobia
phobia of being outside/ public places
out of proportion reaction to the phobic stimulus
behavioural characteristics
panic
crying, screaming or running away
in children = freezing, clinging or having a tantrum
avoidance
great lengths to avoid the phobic stimulus
hard to live a normal life
endurance
opposite of avoidance
remains in the presence of the phobic stimulus but very anxious
