  3. Biological differences (like Parsons)
  4. Marriage = stability
Family diversity and decline in NF led to social problems
1. Teen pregnancy
  1. Only makes up 2% of lone-parent families
2. Failed education
3. High crime rates
4. Poverty
5. Future family breakdown more likely
Lone-parent families
1. Unnatural and harmful to chidlren
2. Lack role model
3. Inadequate socialisation
4. Burden on welfare state
  1. Depends on child's age - if child is 12 above, lone mother earns similar or higher wage to average earner
5. Disapprove of working mothers
6. Cohabitation & divorce = instability
Criticism
1. Level of commitment, not marriage, creates stability
2. Assumed all NF's are good, and all lone parents are bad
3. Doesn't explain social issues derived from NF
4. Cultural differences in gender roles argues against biological differences
5. Feminists: instills partriachy
6. Little/no evidence that lone-parents are part of a 'dependency culture'
Welfare state needed because of lone parents
1. High taxation creates 'perverse incentive' - punish responsible behaviour and reward irresponsible
2. Encourages dependenyc culture
