What is the Big Bang theory?
1. 10,000 million years ago there was a huge explosion in space
2. Matter was hurled in all directions
3. Everything was created from this matter

  1. 100 million galaxies each with 100 million stars have been formed
  2. These galaxies are still moving apart
  3. Cosmic radiation has been detected which is thought to be the heat left over from the original explosion
  4. Evidence
    1. The further away the galaxy the more the light is red-shifted
      1. The whole universe is expanding
    2. The light from other galaxies is red-shifted
      1. Other galaxies are moving away from us
    3. Cosmic microwave background
      1. Created by the big bang
  5. Explains how the universe evolved
    1. Does not explain how the universe began
      1. Could it have been created by God?

What is the theory of evolution?
1. Explains how living things have changed over time
  1. Not what caused this change
    1. Could God have caused it?
2. Supported by the way bacteria evolve
3. Survival of the fittest is the idea that only the best adapted will survive
4. Most species will die out eventually
5. All species evolved from basic life forms
6. Discovered by Darwin who knew that...
  1. Things reproduce freely in the wild
  2. Animals prey on each other
  3. Offspring are not identical to their parents
  4. Many characteristics are inherited
  5. The longer an animal lives the more it reproduces

What is a humanist and what are their views on creation?

  1. As a history of how the world was created according to the Jews
4. Is it compatible with Science?
  1. It can be taken as a metaphor

Do we need to pick a team?
1. Science and religion have been working together for centuries
2. Science can not explain everything
  1. It can normally explain 'how' but not 'why'
  2. It addresses a different question to theology
The Layered Approach
1. Why can't we believe in God and Science?
2. Maybe God used evolution change the world
  1. e.g. Genesis was a metaphor for evolution and God caused things to evolve to how they are today
