The Rationalisation of Swimming
  1. Swimming was done in River Towns and Costal Towns
    1. Rivers provided water for survival.
      1. It was also a functional activity. Done for hygiene and washing.
      2. And after development provided bridges across rivers for transport.
        1. Because of this swimming became a natural activity, and was done for safety.
          1. This developed swimming masters to teach young people how to swim.
            1. Developed swimming skills of youngsters to play safely.
            2. Summer activity.
          2. 1800 - Urban Migration
            1. Lots of people moved to the large cities, where it was cramped, and not near rivers anymore.
              1. There was then a lack of hygiene, as people had no access to clean water.
              2. 1832 - Cholera Epidemic
                1. Water based disease.
                  1. This killed tens of thousands of people
                2. In response to the Cholera Epidemic Public Baths were created.
                  1. 1846- Baths and Wash Houses Act.
                    1. Local authorities (councils) apply for funding to build the public baths.
                      1. They believed this would improve the force of their army and workers.
                        1. It did reduce abstenteeism
                        2. By this time most public baths had hot and cold water.
                        3. These public baths had clothes washing areas and plunge pools.
                          1. These were safe and monitored unlike river towns.
                          2. Split down into first and second class facilities.
                            1. 1d baths - Penny Baths. Made it accessible to the lower classes.
                              1. The first class was the higher working class.
                              2. But in 1849 there was another cholera epidemic.
                                1. As people were still using dirty water in slum conditions.
                                  1. As a result this increased the building of baths and wash houses.
                                2. After 1850 there was an increase in transport.
                                  1. More railways
                                    1. Public baths were more accessible
                                    2. After 1850 there was a growth of Regency Spa Towns.
                                      1. For example Bath or Cheltnham
                                        1. This was because of the growth of middle class towns.
                                          1. With this new traditions were developed.
                                            1. Based on their new found wealth.
                                          2. It was based on a natural spring.
                                            1. As it as thought that water could cure illness and improve health.
                                            2. Developed swimming and bathing facilities.
                                              1. Posh experience

                                                  1. Males and females bathed seperatley
                                                2. Public School Baths
                                                  1. Low status
                                                    1. Couldn't develop team skills
                                                    2. Recreational
                                                      1. Casual Bathing

                                                          2. Harrow Duck Puddle
                                                            1. Created their own pool in the summer out of a river.
                                                              1. After started to develop specialist facilities
                                                            2. Swimming Today

                                                                            1. Competitive side to the sport, with local clubs.
