Resumen del Recurso
Molecular composition
All major atomic constituents of biological macromolecules
Building Blocks
amino acids
simple carbohydrates
lipids
nucleotides
Macromolecules
Proteins
DNA & RNA
complex carbohydrates
lipids
lipids are not made up from polymers of building blocks. they are random structures but are still counted as macromolecules
Polymers of building blocks
super molecular assemblies
Membranes
Ribosomes
Chromatin
Role of Lipids, Carbohydrates, proteins and nuclear acids
Carbohydrates (polysaccharides)
four levels of carbohydrates
Monosaccharides
Single molecule of carbs
Disaccharides
two monosaccharide molecules
oligsacchirdes
3-10 monosaccharide molecules
Polysaccharides
10 or more monosaccharide molecules
The monosaccharide molecules are bonded together via glycosidic bonds by dehydration reaction
Monosaccharide molecules e.g glucose, galactose and fructose
hexoses are carbohydrates with 6 carbons molecules e.g Glucose
Pentoses are carbohydrates with 5 carbons
Monosaccharide molecules are bonded together by glycosidic bonds via dehydration reaction
Glucose has two isomers which when bonded form different molecules.
Alpha
OH group at the bottom
Beta
OH group at the top go the 1st carbon
position OH group determines the isomer
glucose can only bond with similar isomers. e.g can not bond alpha isomer with beta isomer
Function
cell recognition
energy
structure
Lipids
are not the formation of polymers
Hydrophobic
does not interact will water
Diverse structures
steroids
phospholipids
fats (tricyglyerols)
fat soluble vitamins
Function
structure
cell membrane
regularity
energy
nucleic acids
DNA
RNA
information molecule
polymers of nucleotides
proteins
polymers of amino acids
workers of the cell, proteins help cells function
there are 20 different amino acid groups with are determined by their side chains
