  1. Stevenson's books reflects:scientists, a professor of philosophy, and a religious minster.
    1. Charles Darwin published " The origin of species".
      1. Introduces the THEORY OF EVOLUTION to the public
        1. Many people thought it was an attack on religion because the book made it impossible the God created the world in seven days.
      2. The book was released at the same time when many people saw science and a belief in religion and the supernatural as being at odds with each another.
        1. Many people believed that is was dangerous meddling with God.
          1. This is what Jekyll does in the novel.
          2. Closely linked to the Victorians increasing sense of the conflict between science ad religion was the idea that humans have a dual nature.
            1. The book shows good versus evil.
              1. This is the duality the novel explores.
              2. Jack the Ripper murders occurred in London 1888
                1. In the minds of the Victorians, they underlined the Jekell and Hyde duality of human nature, especially as there was discussion about the murderer being highly educated, or even of royal birth.
