5. Internet and Communications(Networking Terms/Error Detection/Compression)
  1. Compression
    1. Used to make files smaller so that the can be transmitted more quickly
      1. Lossy
        1. Individual file made smaller, not all data stored
          1. e.g JPEG, MP3
          2. Lossless
            1. Individual fie made smaller, all data is stored
              1. e.g PNG, GIF
              2. Zipped
                1. Several files compressed tone file that is easily stored or transmitted (lossless)
                  1. e.g ZIP, RAR
                  2. Decision
                    1. Precise data needed=lossless
                      1. Lots of files compressed needed=Zipped
                        1. Precise data not needed= lossy
                          1. Reduce transmission time
                            1. Save disk space
                        2. Networking Terms
                          1. IP(Internet protocol) address
                            1. unique number assigned to a device on a network
                              1. Used to ensure the right data reaches the right device.
                                1. IP addresses divided into four sections
                                  1. e.g 192.168.0.5
                                  2. MAC(media access control)address
                                    1. unique number i that is hardwired into a device and cannot be changed
                                      1. 12 digit hexadecimal number
                                        1. e.g 53:a0:6f:10:44:bd
                                        2. Packets
                                          1. When data is sent across a network it is broken into smaller chunks called packets
                                            1. Packet header,data, packet trailer
                                              1. header includes source address+destination address
                                                1. header contains identification number, needed to reassemble data once transmission is complete
                                                2. Advantages of packet switching
                                                  1. Packets do not need to take the same route around the network
                                                    1. packets do not need to arrive in the same order as they left and reassembled by the recipient computer
                                                3. Error detection
                                                  1. Data transmitted without any such check is not to reliable
                                                    1. Data can be repeatedly sent until a predetermined number of transmissions are identical i.e assumed to be uncorrupt
                                                      1. Parity bit
                                                        1. parity bit added to a transmitted piece of data. Set to 1= even number of 1's, Set to 0= odd number of 1's
                                                          1. Not completely reliable
                                                          2. Checksum
                                                            1. Assigns more than one bit for the purpose of error detection
