Variation AS Unit 2

Variation exists between all individuals:
1. INTERSPECIFIC: Variation that exists between different species e.g Horses vary from Ducks
2. INTRASPECIFIC: Differences that occur within a species e.g lenths of giraffes necks
INTRASPECIFIC is caused by genetic and enviromental factors
1. Genetic
  1. Same Genes = Same species
  2. Different versions of those genes are called alleles
  3. The alleles an organism that has make up its GENOTYPE
  4. Different genotype = variation in phenotype (characteristcs
  5. You inherit from parents specific factors e.g eye colour
2. Enviromental
  1. Phenotype affected by enviroment.
  2. Fur colour
  3. Plant Growth
Investigating Variation
1. Usally you take a sample of a population not whole thing because it is impossible and time consuming
2. Random Sample
  1. Diving field in to a grid and use random generator
3. Standard Deviation
  1. Tells you how much of the values in a single sample vary.
  2. Large SD = Vary alot!
  3. Small SD: Vary alittle around mean value
