    2. 1st Para link this to the intro
      1. Nietzsche work - expresses fear that rise of atheism, decline of religion & absence of higher moral authority (God) = turn the world to chaos Western world - depended on god for so long (thousands of years) - without it, Nietzsche writes that society will move into an age of nihilism
        1. nihilism: belief that all values are baseless and nothing can be known or communicated. True nihilists believe in nothing, have no loyalties, and have no purpose other than the impulse to destroy
      2. “God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?”

                2. Contradictions between religions - can question the validity of some, how will people know which is right?
                  1. "It is a short step from the thought that the different religions cannot all be true, although they all claim to be, to the thought that in all probability none of them is true."
                  2. leads to people disbelieving in God/becoming less dependent on one
