Resumen del Recurso
Heat KS3 Y8
Conduction
An object which has more HEAT or THERMAL ENERGY than another has molecules which vibrate quicker
A thermometer has a rough idea of the amount of thermal energy
Heat transfersfrom a higher to a lower temperature
Solids are better heat conductors than liquids
Stronger bonds in the solids than liquids
Liquids are better than gases
Heat transfers by comduction are when the objects are in contact and the particles don't move.
Metals are the best conductors
Free electrons
Convection
Heat transfers thanks to the movement of matter (Liquids and gases)
Heat doesn't rise
Hot air rises
Hot water/air rises because it is less dense than cold water/air
Hot water is less dense than cold
Has less particles per unit of volume
Hot materials expand and the particles vibrate more and push each other away
Radiation
Heat transfers by radiation
Without...
Movement
Presence of matter
Thermal energy is transferred by light
Electromagnetic Waves called infared
Using black and shiny surfaces
Black surfaces are better infrared emitters than shiny ones.
Black surfaces are good absorbers
Shiny surfaces are good reflectors
Vacuum flask
Stops heat transfers from higher temperatures to lower ones
Insulators reduce heat loss by conduction
Need to trap air
No convection
Carpets on the floor (traps air)
gases are better insulators than solids and liquids
less conduction
Can use glazed windows
Fibre glas son the loft
Cavity wall insulation
Vacuum stops it by conduction and convection
Shiny glass reflects infrared light and reduces heat loss by radiation
Bung stops heat loss by convection
