Chapter 35 - The Impact of WW2 On Americans
Opportunities
Joining the military enabled Americans to show their patriotism
Immigrants & Minorities had a chance to show they were truly American
Japanese Americans fought in the 442nd Division which got more medals than any other unit of its size in US history
Nota:
They were not allowed in the military, but they wanted to prove themselves.
Many women could work jobs that were traditionally for men -> defense industry
Although they did work long hours, and could not take care of children
Tough physical labor increased self confidence for women
As the war progressed many African Americans became military officers engaged in combat
Many African Americans moved to cities for better paying jobs in industry
The Bracero Program enabled Mexican citizens to come to the US to work.
Hardships
On the battlefield GI's were faced w/extreme danger & the fact that they could die at any moment
Japanese nationals were considered enemy aliens & had to register with the govt.
President Roosevelt issued executive order 9066 which placed all people of Japanese descent in internment camps throughout the western US
Women faced hostility on the job by men
African American women faced additional racism
Zoo Suit riots resulted from racial tensions between Mexican Americans & Navy servicemen
Pleas by Jewish Americans to change immigration laws were ignored
Wanted to help Jews in Europe
Used a lot of fabric, unpatriotic
