          1. Epicentre located 80 miles North East from Islamabad
            1. The focus was 10km below the surface
              1. 147 aftershocks after the main earthquake
              2. Social Impacts
                1. 87000 people died from the disaster
                  1. More than 3 million people were affected
                    1. 84% of the people affected live in rural areas
                      1. Further deaths caused by landslides
                        1. 400,000 people live above the winter snow line
                          1. Suffered in temperatures as low as -15c
                          2. One year after the earthquake a third of people had no home
                            1. Illness was caused due to a lack of clean drinking water
                              1. A large proportion of deaths were among children
                                1. Children trapped in their schools
                              2. Economic Impacts
                                1. Half of all building in the local town destroyed
                                  1. A reduction in office and factory space
                                  2. Utilities badly damaged
                                    1. Infrastructure destroyed
                                      1. 80% of all crops in the region are destroyed
                                        1. 50% of all arable land destroyed in the region
                                          1. 100,000 cattle were killed
                                            1. All maize crops were lost, the mills to friend maize were also destroyed
                                              1. Costs
                                                1. Rebuild: $3.5 billion
                                                  1. Agriculture: $220 million
                                                    1. Economic: $5 billion
                                                    2. 0.4% reduction in GDP
                                                    3. Short Term Response
                                                      1. Several days to get emergency aid in
                                                        1. Some areas could only be reached by helicopter
                                                          1. The international response was slow
                                                            1. Two million people depended on food aid
