Psychological Research
  1. Types of Experiments
    1. laboratory experiments

      Nota:

      • all variables can be controlled low ecological validity
      1. field experiments

        Nota:

        • natural environment but variables can still be manipulated slightly impacted ecological validity
        1. natural experiments

          Nota:

          • researchers have no control over variables naturally occurring events
        2. Ethics
          1. informed consent
            1. deception
              1. debriefing
                1. withdrawal
                  1. confidentiality
                    1. protection from harm
                    2. Research Process
                      1. aim

                        Nota:

                        • purpose of the study
                        1. target population

                          Nota:

                          • intended audience of study
                          1. sample

                            Nota:

                            • nature of a group of participants
                            1. representative sample

                              Nota:

                              • reflects the population
                              1. opportunity sampling

                                Nota:

                                • sample of whoever happens to be there and agrees to partcipate
                                1. self-selected sample

                                  Nota:

                                  • made up of volunteers --- sample will be highly motivated, rarely reflects population
                                  1. snowball sampling

                                    Nota:

                                    • participants recruit other participants from among friends/family/acquaintances --- helps reach a specific group of people (e.g. drug users)
                                    1. random sampling

                                      Nota:

                                      • every member of target population has equal chance of being selected --- obtain representative sample, gets rid of selection bias
                                      1. stratified sample

                                        Nota:

                                        • attempts to overcome representative sample problem by drawing random samples from each subpopulation within the target population --- more accurately reflects actual distribution of population
                                    2. procedure

                                      Nota:

                                      • step-by-step process used to carry out the study
                                      1. findings

                                        Nota:

                                        • state how researcher interpreted the data that were collected
                                        1. application

                                          Nota:

                                          • how a theory or empirical study is used
                                        2. variables

                                          Nota:

                                          • independent variable - what is being deliberately manipulated dependent variable - what is affected by the change in independent variable constant - what is kept the same to limit outside factors, (control confounding variables)
                                          1. experimental hypothesis

                                            Nota:

                                            • predicts relationship between IV and DV
                                            1. null hypothesis

                                              Nota:

                                              • predicts that there will be not results (or results from chance) due to change in IV
