  1. Geographical factors
    1. Too widely scattered geographically to mount sustained attack on Reds
      1. No telephone links
        1. Communications and co-ordination difficult
        2. Unity and organisation
          1. White Armies fight as separate detachments; they were not bound together by a single aim
            1. Unwilling to sacrifice individual interests to form united anti-Bolshevik front
              1. Green’s limited aims of national independence meant they never formed a common front
              2. Leadership
                1. Whites lacked leaders of quality of Trotsky (War Commissar)
                  1. Second rate
                    1. Indiscipline and corruption
                      1. Some officers lived in brothers with cocaine and vodka
                      2. Political factors
                        1. Lacked appealing political programme
                          1. Land would be restored to previous owners- peasants outraged
                            1. Refusal to accept national independence movements
                            2. Foreign intervention
                              1. Whites too reliant on supplies from abroad, never arriving in the right time, place or quantity
                                1. Gave the Whites weapons but half-hearted and ineffective
                                2. Propaganda
                                  1. Did not implement propaganda effectively
