Resumen del Recurso
Solar System
The Eight Planets
Mad Vamipires Eat Mangoes And Jump Straight Up Noses.
A planet is something which orbits a Star
The Sun is our Star. There are eight planets that orbit our star
The Sun is really big meaning it has a big Mass. This also means its gravity is really strong.
The pull from the Sun's gravity keeps all of the planets in their orbit.
The Planets
Inner Planets
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
All these Planets come before the Asteroid Belt and are closer to the Sun.
Outer Planets
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
All these Planets come after the Asteroid Belt and are further away from the Sun then the Inner Planets.
Pluto is no longer a Planet. It is a Dwarf Planet.
The Planets all move in elliptical orbits (egg shaped circles)
Heat and Light
Planets DO NOT give off heat or light
Stars (like the Sun) DO give off heat and light
Information About The Planets
The Sizes
The SMALLEST Planet is Mercury.
The BIGGEST Planet is Jupiter by far.
The Masses
Mercury has the SMALLEST mass.
Jupiter has the BIGGEST mass.
The Average Distance From Sun (in millions of km)
Mercury = 58
Venus = 108
Earth = 150
Mars = 228
Jupiter = 778
Saturn = 1430
Uranus = 2870
Neptune = 4500
Orbit Times
Mercury = 88 days
Venus = 225 days
Earth = 365 days
Mars = 687 days
Jupiter = 12 years
Saturn = 29 years
Uranus = 84 years
Neptune = 165 years
Beyond The Solar System
Most of the Stars we see at night are in our own Galaxy
All the others are so far away that they look small and fuzzy.
The Universe is made up of MILLIONS of Galaxies.
The closest galaxy to us is Andromeda
At the end of our Solar System there is the 'Kuiper Belt'. Here is where the Dwarf Planet Pluto is.
Many other Dwarf Planets like Makemake and Eris are in this belt
