First U.S. Party System

Nota:

  • George Washington, the president at the time, was neutral and didn't take a side. During the French Revolution (Britain vs. France), he kept his neutrality. In response, the French felt that the Americans were disloyal because France helped the U.S. during the American Revolution.
  1. Republicans
    1. Head of Party: Thomas Jefferson

      Nota:

      • Background Info: He was a wealthy Virginian planter. Jefferson dressed in everyday cloths. He also spoke like everyday people.
      1. Thought that only WEALTHY, EDUCATED PEOPLE should take part of government
        1. Felt the following things were ideal for ECONOMY : - Agriculture - Industry - No National Government
        2. Focused on strong NATIONAL government; had weak state government.
          1. Wanted to ally with BRITAIN because they wanted to keep Britain as a good trade partner so they traded goods with them
            1. OPPOSED protective tariffs
          2. STRICT interpretation of the Constitution
          3. Federalists
            1. Head of Party: Alexander Hamilton

              Nota:

              • Background Info: He worked up from poverty and was an intelligent student. Hamilton was always well-dressed. He also enjoyed debates and spoke well.
              1. Thought that INFORMED CITIZENS should take part of government
                1. Felt the following things were ideal for ECONOMY : - Manufacturing - Trade - Business - National Bank
                2. Focused on strong STATE government; had weak central government.
                  1. Wanted to ally with FRANCE because they wanted to strengthen ties with the French
                    1. FAVORED protective tariffs
                  2. LOOSE interpretation of the Constitution
