  1. Hardship in the 1920s
    1. Only help for poor: workhouses
      1. Provided food and lodging in exchange for long hours in brutal conditions
      2. Serious unemployment
        1. No unemployment benefit
        2. Old people with no savings suffered badly
          1. No government pensions
            1. Only option: workhouses
          2. Poor housing: cold, cramped, no sewage system
            1. Easy to get ill, meaning missing work and therefore losing your job
            2. People couldn't afford doctors or medicine
              1. Children had to work at an early age and miss out on education
