    Nota:

    • on the 12th January 2010 at 4:53 pm the earthquake hit
    1. Location

      Nota:

      • Haiti isolated near Cuba and Jamaica between North and South America  it's an LEDC
      1. magnitude

        Nota:

        • the earthquake was a 7.0 magnitude and lasted less than 60 seconds 
        1. death toll

          Nota:

          • 200,000 people died 
          1. the plates

            Nota:

            • the north american plate and the caribbean plate  conservative plate boundary 
            1. epicentre and focus

              Nota:

              • the epicentre was only 15 miles from the Capital and the focus was only 13 km below the surface 
              1. Short term effects

                Nota:

                • 3 million people effected over 220,000 dead  300,000 injured  1.3million homeless hospitals collapsed and buildings damaged 
                1. long term effects

                  Nota:

                  • Haiti's main industry damaged loss of income  businesses lost ports and airports damaged 30,000 commercial businesses  destroyed  huge drop in trade  cholera outbreaks

                    1. dominican republic

                      Nota:

                      • provides emergency water and medical aid 
                      1. Iceland

                        Nota:

                        • provides emergency rescue teams
                        1. Red cross

                          Nota:

                          • they encourage donations and set up temporary field hospitals 
                        2. factors making it worse

                          Nota:

                          • very few earthquake proof buildings  poorly built buildings causing them  to pancake  as Haiti's an LEDC it has very few recourses or money so mainly relies on aid 
                          1. secondary response

                            Nota:

                            • donations were still encouraged  in 2011 1300 camps still active  haitians paid to clean up on a cash for work scheme  schools and hospitals rebuilt  farmers supported to grow crops  
                            1. Facts

                              Nota:

                              • 86% of Port au Prince were living in slum conditions  1/2 of Port au Prince had no access to latrines and 1/3 had no access to water  most lived on $2 or less per day
