Assessments for ELLs
  1. Performance - based assessments
    1. Based on classroom instruction and everyday task. These assessments can be used to assess ELLs' language proficiency and academic achievement
      1. Reading with partners, retelling stories, role playing, giving descriptions
    2. Portfolio assessments
      1. Practical ways of assessing student work throughout the entire year. It is a collection of descriptive records of a variety of student work. You can meet with ELLs to develop their goals and standards.
        1. Tapes of oral work, formal test data, teacher descriptions of student accomplishment, samples of written work
      2. Teaching to the test
        1. Teachers are encouraged to teach to the test. Students need to learn how to perform well on meaningful tasks. To aid students in that process, it is helpful to show them models of good (and not so good) performance.
          1. So, by knowing what good performance looks like, and by knowing what specific characteristics make up good performance, students can better develop the skills and understanding necessary to perform well on these tasks.
        2. High-Stakes Testing
          1. These tests are used to make important decisions about students. These include whether students should be promoted, allowed to graduate, or admitted to programs.
            1. Accommodations are available for ELLs • provide extra time for testing • read test instructions aloud • make sure students comprehend the instructions • read the writing and math test items aloud • provide extra breaks during testing • provide a testing environment with fewer students and potential distractions
          2. Ongoing Assessment
            1. Provides continuous feedback on the effectiveness of instruction and indicates areas where a change in instructional strategy may be advised.
              1. Portfolio assessment, Receptive Oral Language Skills, Expressive Language Skills, graphic organizers,
            2. Initial Assessment
              1. ELLs must be identified and students who have been identified as ELLs must be offered a program designed to help them succeed in school.
                1. Language survey (tells educators whether or not the child is exposed to languages other than English), language proficiency tests, story retellings and reading running records, which allows the observer to document and analyze a child’s reading behavior
