Significance of women in Spartan society
  1. Greek states expected women to do the household chores (cooking, grinding corn or washing) or spin and sow if they were rich and had slaves.
    1. Athenian women had limited social activities outside the four walls of their homes, were educated in domestic tasks,couldn't own property.
      1. Their role was centred on the home and family
      2. Important function of a Spartiate women was child bearing - the production of strong, healthy warriors.They had to do regular exercise for this reson.
        1. Women were responsible for supervising the running of the household and managing the estates.
          1. Spartan women could also mingle freely with men and shared their sports.
            1. Spartan women were able to own two fifths of the land.
              1. Spartan women were also renowned for natural beauty, strength and grace.
