The pancreas
  1. Is both endocrine and exocrine endocrine (hormones) - islets of langerhans - produces hormones
    1. Islets of langerhans are clusters of pancreatic cells that sense blood sugar levels and release insulin to maintain normal levels
    2. System: Digestive
      1. Location: Behind the stomach and level with the top of the small intestine
        1. Physical description: Pistol-shape
          1. Function: Secreting digestive enzymes and hormones that control blood sugar levels
            1. Hormones
              1. Insulin - put sugar into storage in muscles = stored energy
                1. If someone injects themselves with insulin but they have not eaten (no sugar for storage) you could go into a diabetic coma - will look drunk, shaky and slur their words
                2. Glucagon - pulls out of storage = energy
                3. Contra indications
                  1. Diabetes
                    1. Type 1 - born with it, progressively worse
                      1. Caused when the body's immune system attacks its own cells in the islets of langerhans meaning that these cells cannot product insulin. Mostly found in under 40's
                        1. Along with different types of medication and refer to GP before go to beauty treatment
                        2. Toilet, tired, thinner, thirsty, weight loss and slow healing
                          1. Most often found in under 40s and found in childhood
                          2. Type 2 - poor diet and exercise (acquired diabetes)
                            1. Caused this is normally when we have put too much sugar into our body
                              1. Can manage diabetes with a controlled diet and careful sugar in take, along with medication (insulin)
                              2. Tired, thirsty, weight loss or gain and healing slow
                                1. Most found in over 40's in white population and over 25's in black and south asian population
                                2. Gland does not produce insulin sugar stays in the blood and damages your vessels, organs ect.
