        1. Definition: collections of attitudes, philosophies and ideas that shape behaviour of individuals
          1. Respect for the law
            1. 1. Respect for life (most important)
              1. 2. Equality
                1. UN declaration of human rights (1948) - everyone's rights and freedoms without discinction of sex
                2. 3. Freedom and Tollerance
                  1. "I utterly agree with everything you say but shall defend to my death your right to say it"
                  2. 4.Protection of the weak
                    1. economic deprivation and ensured standard of living
                    2. 5. Law and competing Values
                      1. Make laws that represent entire nation even when basic social values differ
                    3. Types of Law
                      1. Public
                        1. Able to conduct whole society
                          1. Eg. Constitutional Law, industrial relations law, criminal law
                        2. Civil
                          1. Regulate contact of individuals with other individuals
                            1. Important as direct impact on lives of citizens
                              1. Eg. Contract
                              2. Torts
                                1. Wrongs in Latin
                                  1. Regulates disputes between individuals
                                    1. Covers things like trespassing & liability & defamation
                                      1. Actions which ignores whether intentional or not
                                    2. Rule of Law
                                      1. Nobody stands above the law
                                        1. Prevents arbitrary exercise of power by one individual
                                        2. Fundemental building block of democracy
                                          1. Australia = Representative Democracy
                                        3. Rules vs Laws
                                          1. RULE: Not printed in black and white
                                            1. LAW: Formal, defined rules consciously determined by society
                                              1. Represent the values of a community
                                                1. Provide structure for alteration of laws in accordance to the wishes of society
                                                  1. Regulate and control and provide statement of acceptable behaviours
                                                    1. Provide a formal way of resolving disputes
                                                    2. TEST: Can it be enforceable in the court
                                                    3. Effective Law
                                                      1. Respected and acknowledged by the community
                                                        1. Applies universally without discrimination
                                                          1. Degree of flexibility
                                                            1. Clear understandable wording
                                                              1. Can be enforced easily (straight forward)
                                                                1. Provides sanctions for those who break it
