1916 Rising
  1. WW1 began this led to home rule being postponed
    1. Many nationalists disagreed and wanted home rule
      1. While the British were fighting in WW1 the IRB saw this as an opportunity to win independence for ireland
        1. A military was set up to plan the rising

          Nota:

          • Members included Patrick Pearce, Thomas Clark and Joseph Plunkett
          1. ROGER CASEMENT

            Nota:

            • went to Germany to seek help and buy guns. Weapons were to arrive off the coast of Kerry the ship Aud which was carrying was captured by the British navy
            1. MACNEILL
              1. IRB needed help of the Irish volunteers due to small numbers
                1. castle document

                  Nota:

                  • Joseph Plunkett forged a document which stated that the government was going to arrest the leaders of the volunteers
                  1. MacNeill found out that the castle statement was a forgery
                    1. this caused him to cancel the plans to fight
    2. SUNDAY
      1. on the morning the leaders of the rebellion met
        1. knew there was no hope of success but it would go ahead anyway
          1. they were influenced by blood sacrifice

            Nota:

            • Blood sacrifice the idea that deaths would inspire the Irish to fight for independence
      2. EASTER MONDAY
        1. seized key buildings in dublin

          Nota:

          • Four courts,  Boland's mill, Jacob's factory GPO
          1. GPO was headquarters of the rising
            1. read the proclamation of the irsh republic
        2. TUESDAY
          1. 6000 British soldiers arrived
          2. WEDNESDAY
            1. Helga came up liffey shelled liberty hall
              1. GPO was shelled by guns in trinety college
            2. FRIDAY
              1. evacuation of gpo
                1. moved to moore street
              2. SATURDAY
                1. surrendered
                  1. REBELLION OVER
                2. WHY THE RISING FAILED

                  Nota:

                  • no countywide rebellion, the British could focus all their forces on Dublin  outnumbered  were easily surrounded because they captured key buildings in Dublin

                    • 3000 PEOPLE ARRESTED
