            1. Different forces operate in mind and may cause painful inner turmoil
              1. Typical research method is individual case studies

              2. Many inner conflicts said to have roots in early childhood
              3. Used free association to bring traumatic experiences into consciousness

            2. Freud's theory of development has 3 strands
              1. Driving force (e.g. pleasure principle)

                  1. Organ-focus (e.g. oral stage)
                  2. Explanation of behaviour
                    1. Interaction between innate drives (e.g. pleasure) and early experiences (stress on how much early desires were gratified)
                      1. Conflicts between desires and experiences lead to ongoing behaviour
                    2. Theory of psychoanalysis emphasised early experience, ego defences and unconscious
