Clinical Characteristics of Schizophrenia
  1. Positive - change/addition to norm/ beh/ or thoughts e.g. hallucinations, delusions, distorted thoughts, disorganised speech
    1. Negative - withdrawal/lack of function compared to healthy person. E.g. emotionless, flat, apathetic, withdraw socially
      1. Symptoms - 1 month (ICD), 6 months (DSM)
        1. Not due to organic brain disease, alcohol/drug related intoxication or meet criteria for depression
          1. Generally develops early adult, men + women equally effected - peak age onset women, 5-10yrs later/men
            1. Episodic disorder - periods psychotic disturbance interspersed w/ norm/ functioning. Active psy/ ep/s = 1 month-1 year
              1. Lack of agreement SZ outcomes. Recent longitudinal studies = 2/3rds substantial recovery (Johnstone, 1991)
