  1. religion and parliament
    1. majority of P were puritan calvonists
      1. Didnt like charles as he was arminian
      2. charles tried to reform the church to arminianism
        1. Williams Laud does opening speach at parliament - leading arminian... spoke about obediance to the king
          1. often seen as a mistake by charles
          2. York house conference 1626---- discussing work by mortegue a leading Arminian.
            1. ended up supporting him, pushing his ideas
              1. seriously angered calvonist P members
            2. Robert sibthorpe (arminian minister) gave a speech defending the forced loan
              1. Archbishop Abbot did not support this speech, therefore got suspended from office
            3. finance and parliament
              1. forced loan- Charles made people give a gift of money to the crown, the equivalent amount that they would have paid if P granted subsidies
                1. raised £260'000
                  1. collected the money publicly so people are more likely to pay
                    1. 5 KNIGHTS CASE
                      1. 1627 - five gentlemen imprisoned for not playing the forced loan
                        1. went to court and the King won so it backed up the DRK
                      2. Billeting and Marshal law
                        1. billeting
                          1. civilians had to house and feed troops
                          2. Marshal law
                            1. legal processes were suspended
                              1. led to soldiers commiting crimes like stealing from houses
                          3. TONNAGE AND POUNDAGE
                            1. Customs tax allowed for one year but Charles continued to claim for longer

                              1. 1628- charles called P... petition of Right signed
                                1. No more forced loans, no imprisonment without trial, no more billeting and marshal law
                                  1. 5 subsidies were voted totaling £280'000
                                2. SHIP MONEY
                                  1. only for coastal towns.
                                    1. was accepted during the 1620's
                                    2. Dowry from French match
                                      1. £240'000 for marrying Henrrieta Maria
