Hypocalcemia
Causes
Low Albumin Levels
Alkalosis (symptomatic hypocalcemia)
Multiple blood Transfusions (citrate used to anticoagulate binds w/ Ca+)
Laxatives or Malabsorptive syndromes

Signs & Symptoms
chvotek's sign
Twitching of the cheek occurs in response to tapping over the facial nerve
Trousseau's sign
Carpal spasm of the hand develops when BP cuff is inflated above the systolic Pressure
Hyperflexia
Tetany
Numbness, & tingling of the nose/ears/fingertips (it may progress to muscle spasm or convulsion
Hypomagnesium
Larygeal Spasm w/ Stridor
Arrythmias (decreased Contractility)

IV Calcium Gluconate (0.5-1ml)
Monitor Skin (Tissue Necrosis)
Diet of Ca+ Rich foods/ or Oral Supplement
Breath into paper bag (to control muscle spasm)
