Theonomous Approach To Christian Ethics
Bible as the Only source of authority
Biblicist or fundamentalist view. Often classed as slightly naïve
Man has an agenda and so we are fallible
Due to original sin we are also at fault
However there were over 40 authors and it was written over a period of 1500 years
They believe that God is the only source of moral authority
He is infallible and the bible contains all that we need. For example the 10 commandments which are routed in the covenant to Abraham
Sermon on the mount does not only give guidance, rather it gives us a way to live our lives
Literalism and Interpretation
should we apply anything situationally
Notion that Gods word is revealed to the reader through the Bible.
"if your right eye turns to sin, tear it out and throw it away." Matthew 5:29
This poses a very large problem for the literal interpretation of the Bible
Karl Barth
says that if you take it literally you idolise it, he called this bibliolotry.
He said that the bible is the witness to the word. They are not led by him and there may be symbolism
We need to use our reason to interpret the bible, to understand whether it is literal, symbolic or metaphorical
Dealing with Contradictions
Biblicists
Believe that Jesus is preparing us for the Kingdom of God
Similarly as to the prophets of the old testament
Other Christians
For example non-Biblicists like Martin Luther
Pacifism and non-violence of Jesus' moral duty to follow the love of Christ
Contradicitions show that reasons should be used and applied because if we do not then it is almost impossible to follow a fully Biblicist view
Through reason we are able to use God's teachings in all situations.
This allows us to fully engage with the ethical principles of Christianity or other religions in accordance to their teachings
