REACTION TO THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES
France
Enthusiasm... to begin with
Thought German threat was gone
1 year: Should have been harder
Clemenceau lost French election
Britain
Most people happy
Thought Germany got what they deserved
Some worried...
Germany might be angry
Germany may fight back
Nota:
They would do this be reclaiming all of the land that they had lost due to the treaty.
Germany
Lost 10% of land
Lost 12.5% of their population
Didn't feel they were to blame
Nota:
Germany thought that they weren't the only ones to blame for WWI, they thought other countries played a part too.
They had no say in the Treaty
Nota:
They were forced to sign it and couldn't negotiate any of the points.
Thought it would be nicer to them
Nota:
They thought this because of Wilson's 14 Points speech.
German government changed
Nota:
The government who signed the treaty were not actually the ones who had fought in the war.
Army limits made them vulnerable
They feared poverty and starvation
Nota:
They thought that the reparations were much higher than what they could afford and thought that they wouldn't be able to pay them.
