War and Violence
For War
'Prepare for War! Rouse the warriors'
Wars which are fought in the name of religion and are deemed to be the will of God are called HOLY WARS
'The Lord loves righteousness and justice. The earth is full of his unfailing love'
War can be used for good deeds e.g. Stopping Hitler for killing more people
'The Lord is Warrior'
'eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth'
Jesus was angered by people selling in and outside of the holy temple
Against War
'Do not Murder'
Killing is wrong, as we are told not to murder
'Love thy enemies..'
'Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God'
War and Violence is Wrong - Quakers
Pacifists - Believe that war and violence is wrong no matter what
The Just War Theory
Guidelines to a just war
1. Only a legitimate authority can start the war
2.There must be just cause for going to war
3.The war must be fought for the right intention
4. The war must be a last resort
5.Civilians must be protected throughout the war
6. The war should bring about more good than evil
Pacifists believe war and violence is wrong no matter what
e.g. Martin Luther King and Gandhi
'Love Thy Neighbour'
Punishment
'Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out Hate. Only Love can do that'
'Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favouritism'
'Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us'
Deterrence - To try to stop other people from committing the same crime
Protection - To ensure that other people are not harmed by re-offenders
Retribution - To get even/back at the person who committed the crime
Reparation/Restoration - to right the wrong that has been committed
Reformation/Rehabilitation - To change the offender so that they don't commit crimes on the future
Capital Punishment

Adultery, homosexuality, murder and cursing your mother and father - Are sinful acts which you should be killed for
