        1. Society needs specialists
          1. Some of the jobs have higher status, rewards and power than others
            1. People would accept this aslong as they see the systems fair
              1. Potential conflict can be controlled by socialisation
                1. Disharmony might arise when people felt the system was not fair
                  1. Bankers bonuses during recession
                  2. Collective conscience
                  3. Parsons
                    1. Stratification exists on the premise of which roles are agreed to be more important therefor functional
                      1. This is agreed as agents of socialisation teach shared norms & values
                        1. value consensus, a shared identity commits people to the maintenence of society
                          1. These values also give common goals such as to work hard
                            1. People have a number of ascribed roles eg women expressive and men instrumental
                            2. Davis & Moore
                              1. Role allocation - most talented for more demanding jobs
                                1. Meritocracy - most able will be allocated most important jobs
                                  1. Delayed gratification - most talented will make sacrifises to be rewarded later
                                    1. Examination system will 'sift and sort' meanind the system is legitimated
                                      1. Stratification means thse on top maintain and those below better themselves
                                    2. Key functionalist knowledge
                                      1. Structural theory
                                        1. Society based on shared values
                                          1. Consensus means equilibrium and harmony
                                            1. This will result in social solidarity
                                              1. Inequalities are inevitable and necessary
