  1. Lymph nodes

    Nota:

    • the head and neck have a rich supply of 60-70 nodes  -huge part of the immune system  -detects and eliminates foreign substances from the body
    1. Different nodes

      Nota:

      • Preauricular, occipital, submental, supraclavicular, superficial cervical for example
    2. Aging adult

      Nota:

      • Facial bones and orbits appear more prominent -facial skin sags=decreased fat, moisture and elasticity 
      1. Sutures

        Nota:

        • Develop in early childhood -coronal=crowns the head from ear to ear -sagittal=seperates the head lengthwise between two paretal bones  -lambdoid= crosswise from parietal to occipital 
        1. Face
          1. Cranial Nerve VII

            Nota:

            • facial expressions are controlled by this nerve 
            1. eyes, ears, brows, nose, mouth

              Nota:

              • these structures should appear about the same on both sides 
              1. Nerve V

                Nota:

                • Sensation of pain and touch 
              2. Glands
                1. Parotid

                  Nota:

                  • In the cheeks over the mandible, anterior to and below the ear. 
                  1. Submandibular

                    Nota:

                    • beneath the mandible at the angle of the jaw 
                    1. sublingual

                      Nota:

                      • lies in the floor of the mouth 
                    2. Thyroid gland

                      Nota:

                      • releases hormones in charge of metabolism  -Endocrince gland -Straddles trachea in middle of neck
                      1. Cranial Bones

                        Nota:

                        • Frontal, Parietal, occipital and temporal 
                        1. Muscles of neck

                          Nota:

                          • cranial nerve XI
                          1. Trapezius

                            Nota:

                            • From Occipital bone and vertebrae and extend fanninh out to the scapula and clavicle 
                            1. Sternomastoid

                              Nota:

                              • From sternum and clavicle to diagonally across neck to the mastoud proces behind ear
