          2. Dr Jekyll is respected and seen as a Victorian gentleman even though he pushes the boundaries of science. Mr Hyde refuses to follow the social conventions which allow for discrepancy.
        3. Women
          1. The maid

This introduces her as a stereotypical Victorian female - romantic, innocent and gentle. She then notices Mr Hyde, but she has ‘conceived a dislike’ for him previously - a female who is used to depict innocence already having a dislike for a man which is a strong emotion, and a notion supposed to be suppressed by Victorian society.
            2. The young girl
              1. She is used a a literary device - only used as the subject for the mistreatment by mistreatment as youth can represent innocence and goodness, and women were believed to be pure and innocent.
            3. Zoomorphism / atavism
