  1. GREED
    1. Context: Written in 19th century, large divide between rich and poor, this led to exloition of workers from greedy employers. Scrooge lacks philanthropy at the beginning
      1. 1. "tight fisted hand at the grindstone", he only cares about gain. "a very small fire but the clerk's was so very much smaller".
        1. 2. stave 2, Scrooge reflects upon his past, his "nobler aspirations" disappeared the "master of passion gain" took over. Scrooge did not always have avarice, it affects people around his, "would choose a dowerless girl"
          1. 3. Scrooge is ashamed of his greed for money when he sees the Cratchit's meagre meal. The ghost warns him, "it may be that, in sight of heaven you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child"
            1. 4. Scrooge realised the error of his ways, Scrooge was not "natural in his lifetime" he does not have "somebody to look after him when he is stuck with death". He will have a lonely death with no one to grieve for him
              1. 5. Scrooge learns from his mistakes living in "past", "present" and "future" At the end the charity man says, "my dear Scrooge, are you serious?" He has changed and become more philanthropic
