Network Hardware

LAN
1. Local area network
2. A network of computers in the same building. This does not rely on an internet connection.
WAN
1. Wide area network
2. Created when LANs are connected. The internet is a WAN.
Topologies
1. BUS: Data flows along main cable.
  1. Advantages
    1. Easy to add new work stations
    2. Cheaper
  2. Disadvantages
    1. If there is a problem with the main cable, the network stops.
2. STAR: Each device has a cable directly to the main server.
  1. Advantages
    1. Reliable
  2. Disadvantages
    1. Expensive
3. RING: Data token passes from one PC to the next.
  1. Advantages
    1. No reliance on central PC
  2. Disadvantages
    1. Harder to add to
Networks
1. Advantages
  1. Share files
  2. Communication
  3. Share devices
  4. Roaming profile
2. Disadvantages
  1. Expensive hardware
  2. Risk of viruses / hacking
  3. Requires specialist staff
Created when more than one device is connected together. The main purpose is to share data between computers.
