Resumen del Recurso
Chemistry
Bonding
Single, Double and Triple Bonds
Represent number of electrons taken or shared
Ionic, Metallic, Covalent
Covalent Bond --> "Share" Bond
Ionic Bond --> "Give & Take" Bond
Metallic Bonding occurs between metals
Elements need 8 valence electrons to be stable
Use bonding to achieve this
Column number tells you the number of electrons on the last shell
4 electrons on last shell
Ethylene (C2H4)
Chemical Equations
Balancing chemical equations
Check the differences on both sides of the equation
Make sure the correct structure is used
Make sure both sides are equal
Consider all elements in compounds
Types of chemical equations
Synthesis
A + B --> AB
When two or more chemicals combine to form a product
H2+ N2 --> NH3
Decomposition
AB --> A + B
HgO --> Hg + O2
When a compound breaks down into its elements or simpler compounds
Single Replacement
AB + C --> AC + B
HgO + Cl2 --> HgCl + O2
When a single element takes the place of an element in a compound
Double Replacement
AB + CD --> AD + CB
When an element in two compounds swap to create new compounds
CuCl2 + H2S --> CuS + HCl
Structuring chemical equations
Reactants on LHS
--> used to represent reaction
Product on RHS
Na + Br2 --> NaBr
Periodic Table of Elements
Alkali Metals (Period 1)
Highly reactive
Explode in water
Lose electrons easily
Small size
Alkaline Earth Metals (Period 2)
Not as reactive as Alkali Metals
Transition Metals (Periods 3-12)
Some create colour
Highly abundant
Malleable
Some can conduct electricity
Noble Gases
Very stable
Chemical Reactions
Physical Changes
Can be reversed
Atomic structure remains the same
Change in appearance
Indications of reactions
Smell
