timber
made from trees
two types
hardwood
decisuous trees- lose leaves each autum
beech
chairs and toys
tough, hard and wear resistant
mahogany
veneers and indoor furntiture
high- quality, polishes well, but has interlocking grain, making it difficult to work
softwood
coniferous trees- evergreen
grow faster- usually cheaper
redwood
Scots pine
construction work
easy to work, durable, relatively cheap
Western Red Cedar
silky smooth finish
outdoor woodwork- contains natural oils protecting it from the weather
conversion
Cutting wood from tree trunks
then: seasoning
planks are dried- to prevent it warping or twisting
machined
into shape
Manufactured board
made from wood fibre or layers
no limit on size, they're not cut from trees so can be made into large sheets
cost less
more environmentally friendly
use waste from the processing of wood
properties are not affected by grain of the wood
MDF
Medium Density Fibreboard
made by squeezing and gluing tiny wood particles together
no grain- smooth surface
DIY indoor furniture
Hardboard
slightly larger particles
one side smooth, other rough
lower strength than other manufactured boards
places where it cant be seen- backs of drawers
Plywood
thin strips of wood, glued together
veneers
each strip is glued with the grain running at a right angle to the previous one
appearance can be improved by covering it in high- quality hardwood venneers
Blockboard
strips of softwood sandwiched between 'plies'
the grain of the plies runs at right angles to the softwood strips
Chipboard
small chips of wood squeezed and glued together
appearance improved by hardwood veneers or a thin layer of plastic
cheap with rough surface
kitchen worktops
renewable materials
if managed sustainably, it will never run out
reclaimed wood
good quality wood can be re-used
wood can also be recycled
e.g. for making manufacture boards
or just burned as fuel, to produce energy
