Biology topic 3
AEROBIC RESPIRATION
glucose + oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water + energy
DIFFUSION
high concentration to low
in circulatory system
in respiration
diffusion of CO2 in
diffusion of O out
diffusion of glucose out
EXERCISE
blood is pumped faster
respires faster
o2 and glucose out faster, co2 in faster
heart rate
breathing rate
o2 taken in faster
co2 released faster
cardiac output=stroke volume x heart rate.
stroke volume = volume of blood pumped by the heart in one beat
ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION
glucose=lactic acid +energy
release of energy w/o using o2
ads
allows muscle to contract even when the heart and lungs cannot deliver o2 fast enough
disads
releases much less energy
lactic acid is not removed from the body, it builds up in the blood and must be broken down.
EPOC
excess post-exercise oxygen consumption
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
process plants use to make glucose
carbon dioxide + water -energy from light->> glucose + oxygen
chlorophyll in chloroplasts capture light energy needed for PS.
stomata in the leaf surface allows carbon dioxide needed for PS to diffuse into the leaf.
they also allow o2 and water vapour produced by PS to disuse out of the leaf.
LIMITING FACTORS
low temp, dim light, low co2 conc.
can be measured by the rate at which o2 is given off by a piece of pondweed
WATER TRANSPORT
substances dissolved in the water are transported around plants by veins
veins contain tissues called xylem and phloem
water and dissolved minerals enter through roots
travel in xylem to rest of the plant
glucose (made in leaves by PS) converted to sucrose
sucrose transported in phloem to rest of plant
transpiration
evaporation of water from inside leaves to the outside air
evaporation of water vapour from leaves
draws water out of the leaf cells and xylem
draws water up xylem from roots
water enters roots by osmosis
active transport
subs move up or against their conc gradient
needs energy so subs can move
osmosis
diffusion of water molecules
OSMOSIS
net movement of water molecules from high to low conc through a partially permeable membrane
ORGANISMS AND ENVIRONMENT
pooter
sweeper net
pitfall trap
quadrats
