Afghanistan was seen as buffer between ( Iran, Pakistan ) and the USSR as the USSR did not want Islam to spread across their borders. The Kabul revolution, ( 1978, 1979, 1980 ), was the overthrow of the Afghan royal family for a new communist president, Mohammed Taraki, who became an ally of the ( USSR, China ). He introduced a communist reform and imprisoned, tortured and killed many Muslims. This made the government unstable as Taraki place in power was threatened by Hafizullah ( Amin, Kamal, Babrak ), deputy prime minister. The SU helped Amin by providing weapons and ( advisors, equipment, troops ).
