Materials go into and out of cells by diffusion through the cell membrane. These materials include oxygen, carbon dioxide and glucose. When a leaf cell is photosynthesising:

The concentration of carbon dioxide outside the cell is greater than the concentration inside, so carbon dioxide diffuses into the cell
The concentration of oxygen inside the cell is greater than the concentration inside, so oxygen diffuses out of the cell.

In addition to these three elements, plants need a number of minerals for healthy growth. These are absorbed through the roots as mineral ions dissolved in the soil water. Two important mineral ions needed by plants are: nitrate - for making amino acids, which are needed to make proteins.

why do farmed fish grow faster than wild fish?

Wild fish have these benefits on their side:

a higher level of omega 3 fatty acids,
a lower level of total fat
no chance of containing antibiotics
perhaps fewer pesticides and environmental pollutants (in ocean fish, not necessarily in lake fish)

Benefits of farm fish include:

lower cost
more control over the purity of the water, so they may have a lower level of pollutants
more control over flavor and quality. A farmer can cater to specific tastes (so-called “designer fish”)
an ecological alternative to depleting fish populations in certain already over-fished waters
